A familiar story leaps out of the pages this week, the story of Eve and the serpent. Striking things that pertain to our lives of empowerment are depicted as the serpent approaches Eve. Three distinct steps took place, steps that still work against us today. However, once recognized, we now know that the serpent can be brought down and the power over us destroyed in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Gen 3:1-8 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. 4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. 6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. 7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
The first thing that happened was the enemy presented a lie. His lie was aimed at attracting and drawing the emotional and mental faculties of Eve. It was an evil seed. When the evil seed mixed with the good seed in her mind it produced confusion. As the confusion entered into her being, she yielded to temptation and was seduced into sin. We know the rest of her story.
The three steps in order are: the lie is spoken, confusion comes, and lastly, the seduction is completed by yielding to sin.
The enemy has no new weapons. Indeed, there is no new thing under the sun. He still uses these same tactics in the same way, in the same order, today.
The first step to overcoming the enemy is to recognize the lie. Our conscience, our knowledge of the Word written in our hearts and minds, and our connection to our God provides protective guidance for us.
If we turn away from the lie, we will not come into confusion and we will be strong to resist the devil. We will be strong to rebuke him, to resist him and to cause him to flee from us in the name of Jesus.
Eccl 1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
James 4:7-8 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
